2012 keeps bringing good things my way. The good folks over at King Deluxe are preparing their first physical release in Evy Jane‘s Sayso 12″. The project focuses on slithering alt-RnB, built on the quality and sensibilty of UK bass and filtered through a lens smeared with what’s left of post-rave culture. Yeah, that was an elaborate description, but Vancouver’s Evy Jane is not easy to describe. This is a nice maturation for King Deluxe – a smooth comedown from their erratic, beatcentric catalogue. Head over to Bandcamp and preview the single, which also has a couple pro refixes from Vancity bass stalwarts Max Ulis and Taal Mala, and pre-order the vinyl.

The Thing at Lake Tahoe by fancymike

The Magic Place by fancymike

Boomkat by fancymike

Fires by fancymike

Been waiting for minute now for a new Fancy Mike release. While Sigma Chi Primavera pushed my wig back, it felt more like a remix compilation than it did a true successor to his phenomenal Madison Square Gardner. He’s recently developed a flair for minimalism and has bombed his soundcloud with a bunch of free downloads, all which are quite dope, none of which sound like his previous work. In a good way.

Album: Muta – Runner

The good people at King Deluxe Records have once again, without warning, dropped another experimental gem. They say don’t judge a book by it’s cover (in this case designed by BC’s Laura Bifano), but in this case you could probably be forgiven for doing so. Runner is action-packed, pixelated synthesizer fury. The album’s inspiration comes from cult classic film Logan’s Run which, set in the year 2116, details a society where execution is mandatory on one’s 21st birthday and Runners are those who attempt to flee such destiny. Deep stuff. If you listen to the 9 tracks with this basic plot line in mind, you may just find your imagination running wild (ahem).

All fantasy aside, this is crumbling glitch music set to a backbone of deep, crushing drum patterns and brainy melodies. Colliding waveforms that seem to disintegrate on impact and ever-present bass swells hold your attention while tracks develop in dance music fashion: creating a foundation, peaking and then raining down on you with fat drops and kaleidoscopic effects. Like previous King Deluxe releases Madison Square Gardner and Jay’s Odyssey, Runner displays a very competent understanding of tempo and rhythm and doesn’t easily lend itself classification. Let’s just call it critical mass hip hop.
