Mix: Jesse Futerman – Live At the Drake Hotel

Jesse Futerman – Live @ the Drake Hotel Jan 27 2012 by jessefuterman

Jesse Futerman is another Canuck who is doing great things for the frosty north’s reputation. His Super Basement EP was one of my favourite albums of last year and I’ve been eagerly anticipating his next project. This mix, live from the T-Dot’s Drake Hotel, is proof positive that this dude doesn’t just murk his original productions, but is a beast in the mix as well. Gathering rap and electronic selections and some highlights of when the two meet, Futerman crafts an hour long mix that doesn’t miss the mark once. This should hold me down for a bit.

Freebie Friday: Jesse Futerman – Super Basement EP

Jus Like Music continues to show off it’s versatility in the ever-evolving field of electronic beat music with this excellent release from Canadian Jesse Futerman. This one’s been out for a few weeks and has been slowly growing on me with it’s dusty reinterpretations of classic samples and quintessential breaks. Super Basement EP takes the approach of combining near-innumerable amounts of samples to create thick collages of instrumental sound, but unlike say, Endtroducing, this is more like Mad Blunted Jazz, focused less on creating a cinematic mood and more on reaching a rock-solid groove. There are many memorable moments packed into 6 tracks and 20 minutes, and old heads will love Jesse’s rehashing of familiar samples like the H.P. Riot guitars from Shadow’s “Building Steam With a Grain of Salt” or the unmistakable Monk Higgins horns first heard on Gangstarr’s “Next Time”. If the LP is as tight, we could be looking at a modern day classic of traditional Instrumental Hip Hop.
