Album: Hashbrown – The Walk Off

After a string of releases in the third quarter of 2011, Jellyfish Recordings is right back to work in 2012, introducing another young talent into the fold and preserving their unwavering standard of quality. Serving as another welcome accompaniment to the Vancouver collective’s buffet of psychedelic, alt-hip hop explorations, The Walk Off takes a strict found-sound approach in the bleary-eyed vein of a certain native of Oxnard, CA. Hashbrown, an obscured young producer hailing from just outside of Vancity, creates a muddled 37-track composition rife with soulful grooves and ambiguous vocal splicing. exhibiting a scope beyond his years and a owl’s ear for sample detection, Brown tailors sprightly productions that unfold like a trip down memory lane for people with amnesia – on the cusp of familiarity but rarely revealing themselves outright. For the dig-minded this is as much fun as you can have without weed (although I recommend a mixture of the two). Most importantly, the LP takes all these faint little Polaroids to create a wonderful mosaic that is as well executed in sequencing as it is in skill, creating a loose narrative that sets it apart from other more unfocused sample workouts.

Album: AstroLogical – FLUX EP

Stating the obvious: Jellyfish Recordings is the most important label pushing hip hop beats in Vancouver right now. Their eclectic roster has saturated the playing field with quality releases throughout 2011. The informed raps of Indigo Kids, Headspace’s hyperactive jazz fusion, and Dpee’s unabashed glitch all contribute to a movement greater than the sum of it’s parts. Another Dimension confirmed this. At the helm remains AstroLogical, the most prolific and talented of the squad, whose development has been palpable since last year’s Living Fossils. He combines the visceral and the psychedelic in ways that often drown out the backbone of the track, the drums, so effectively that you forget that his sound is fundamentally hip hop. The transition from Far Far Away to Polynesian Dream (his 2 prior 2011 releases) saw the quality of the productions increase and his ideas streamlined as to better affirm Astro’s musical identity. His FLUX EP takes that identity and utilizes it really, really well. Everything just seems dialed in so emphatically that the instruments (whether sampled or live) just speak volumes. The bassline on leader “Delerium” makes for easily the best opening 20 seconds I’ve heard on a record all year. The soft synth melodies on “Why?” are perfectly conducive to the tracks title and when those lovely female vocals chime in, it doesn’t matter why. “Diamonds In Your Eyes” has the producer using his voice like a liquid instrument, a la Shlohmo, and leaves you wondering what strange instrumental incarnation will happen next only before ending the EP. A full-length project is due “early 2012″ and, for those of us lucky enough to be listening, we’ll get to see the next logical step in AstroLogical’s journey.

Freebie Friday: Jellyfish Recordings Presents – Another Dimension

If there were ever a worry that somewhere in the midst of the ongoing renaissance in instrumental hip hop that the soul would be siphoned out only to be replaced by a computer, Jellyfish Recordings is here to prove otherwise. Another Dimension ( a sequel to 2010′s Dimensions) is a clinic in carefully tuned balance, and not only takes the title of best beat compilation released out of Canada this year, but is an emphatic statement regarding the subterranean hip hop culture in Western Canada as a whole. With the saturation of paint-by-numbers, “post-Dilla”, L.A. scene-aping currently going on in every conceivable nook and cranny of the world, tracks like AstroLogical’s “Vessels” or Jolin Ras’ “The Hunter” are just refreshing. The collection as a whole slaloms between old school vibes and new school technique, blurring the lines between the pedigree of 90′s New York boom-bap and today’s current breed of mutant synth-driven, groove-heavy beat mangling. Much like the Fly Russia compilation did for the Russian scene, this is the chilly Northwest’s way of showcasing their style and talent, and letting the world know we’ve got some tricks up our sleeves, too.

It’s important to note that while this album is available for free download, donations are welcome and 75% of the proceeds go to the Arts Umbrella, a non-profit organization that is devoted to creating art programs for young people of all social and cultural backgrounds, and a fixture in Vancouver that has nurtured many an artist, myself included. If you like this record, donate!

Interlude: Since we last spoke…

I decided to take a break from typing for a couple weeks, I’m sure nobody really noticed, but for those that did here’s few things of interest:

Shambhala Music Festival

Like other losers who couldn’t escape their professional obligations long enough to escape to the forest to attend BC’s premiere electronic music festival, my only solace lies here. Big shout to Syd Woodward and Grounded TV for the stunning photography.

Danny Brown – XXX

The Hybrid finally serves us with another tape, XXX, a reference not to pornography but seniority. I’m a firm believer that the “Adderall Admiral” is one the freshest breaths of air in the game, I just can’t always cosign his taste in beats and lack of continuity in his full lengths. Unfortunately, this isn’t an exception, and although this is easily Danny Brown’s most complete offering to date (and a very listenable one as well), we’ll have to wait for that singular classic I know he has in him.

Shlohmo – Bad Vibes

Speaking of artists finding their sweet spot to deliver a classic record, Bad Vibes really, really delivered. All the things that made Shlohmo’s airy, ethereal style of choppy lo-fi hip hop so unique has been delicately refined to create a sprawling, impressionist work that will inevitably burrow into the hearts and minds of many. The title is a total misnomer.

Local Cats

Some locals unleashed heat in the past couple weeks as well:

Via Jellyfish Recordings

Via Neferiu Records / Metawon

I’m really feeling both of these projects and the Vancity / Cowtown scene is definitely keeping it real this year when it comes to instrumental hip hop.

ASAP Rocky

This guy is gaining serious momentum. Let’s hope his debut is constructed with Clams Casino production and tracks like “Peso”  and “Purple Swag” and not any of the lazy filler that comprises most of his Deep Purple mixtape.

?uestlove’s Fantastic Pitchfork Interview

Say what you like about the goliath, be-all-end-all of “indie” record review sites that is Pitchfork Media, but they do strike it rich on a fairly consistent basis. Their latest gold mine comes in the form of the exceedingly likable ?uestlove and his highly entertaining (and nostalgic and insightful ) interview for their 15 year celebration.

More to come soon…
