Jesse Futerman is another Canuck who is doing great things for the frosty north’s reputation. His Super Basement EP was one of my favourite albums of last year and I’ve been eagerly anticipating his next project. This mix, live from the T-Dot’s Drake Hotel, is proof positive that this dude doesn’t just murk his original productions, but is a beast in the mix as well. Gathering rap and electronic selections and some highlights of when the two meet, Futerman crafts an hour long mix that doesn’t miss the mark once. This should hold me down for a bit.
The peeps at Streets of Beige may be half a world away, but somehow they always seem to hone in on talent bubbling out of the U.S. and beyond. Their eponymous club night based in London welcomes beat manglers from both sides of the water and the collective acts as ambassadors to all things bass and beat related. Their mix series has also been a proven source of amazing artist-curated playlists, from the likes of Knxwledge and Infiniti Rock. This time around we get a stellar set from Shigeto, who displays his affection for gurgling synths and broken beats in an air-tight mix of North American post-hip hop.
Heavy D’s music elicits early memories of hide-and-seek and Master T. Although I only have hazy Rapcity memories of the overweight lover, his persona lived on in the suave, party-friendly aesthetic of 90′s Rap-RnB crossover and, of course, the Notorious B.I.G. on “Big Poppa”. Peep the worthy Mister Cee tribute and pay respect to a luminary.
A good Q&A with Victoria’s number one badman, Monolithium. He’s a funny, down to earth dude, and sums up the Vancouver and Victoria underground club scenes nicely. I gotta go check out Vic. Peep the interview here.
He also blesses us with a free mix that includes an UNFRICKINREAL Company Flow re-up. Stream here or DL here.

The kid eLan has been producing hot beats all year, his “I Wanna Be Down” remix being a personal highlight for myself. Like his Wedidit Collective brethren, his sound is filled with future Hip Hop and RnB groove that ever-so-slightly hints at funk and Soul. His Inverted Audio Mix acts as a perfect introduction to his sound:
1. devonwho – Strange Brew
2. Insightful – Kill the Dude with Dreads
3. Spinnerty feat. John Robinson – Just Listen (B. Bravo Remix)
4. Kurupt – Who Ride Wit Us
5. Prodigy – Keep It Thoro (eLan Remix)
6. eLan – Next 2 Last
7. J Davey – Raincheck
8. eLan feat. Marzio – Cave Music
9. eLan – 2in5four (Low Limit Remix)
10. Birdy Nam Nam feat Teki Latex – Cadillac Dreams
11. mndsgn – OkThen
12. B Bravo feat. Zacky Force Funk – Kiss ‘n’ Tell
13. Rustie – After Light
14. devonwho – onhold2
15. eLan – Saccharin On Top
16. When Saints Go Machine – Kelly (Shlohmo Remix)
17. How to Dress Well – Ready for the World
18. Slidecamp – Geometer (Jonwayne Remix)
19. mndsgn – AlmostDecent
Daytrotter usually only caters to the most discerning of hipsters, but every once in a while they’ll throw in a Hip Hop act that they deem relevant (read: Mac Lethal) for some of that crossover cred. Thankfully Shabazz Palaces are currently the critical darlings of every online and offline publication in existence, and they’re tapped for an immaculate live studio session. Offering up a couple tracks from Black Up, “Blastit”, and an absolute gem of an unreleased joint titled “Emblazoned on Ice”, the session is brief and is a great summary listen for fans and newcomers alike. Thick bass, long echoes, and Kalimbas included.
